This course investigates popular culture as a critical site of Afro Asian relations. Through interdisciplinary inquires of various genres of popular culture and music, we will together analyze how cultural crossings between Asian and African Americans may advance anti-racist praxis, reinforce relations of power, and otherwise result in conflicting interracial possibilities. The course explores a wide range of topics, including Afro Asian solidarity in social movements, hybrid music, Asian Americans in Hip Hop, martial arts and Black expressive culture, and polycultural community formations.
