Herman Melville (1819-91) and Gustav Mahler (1860-1911): Our First Twentieth Century Artists, at the Cutting Edge of Cultural History

One of these artists held Europe's most prestigious music directorship; the other was one of America's bestselling authors of the 1840s.  Both expressed continued frustration at audience and critical understanding of their work, yet both would persevere to lay the foundations for much twentieth century art, winning enormous - if posthumous - acclaim.
