AMERICAN CULTURE STUDIES 351

This course explores the history of commercial television in the United States, beginning with broadcasting and continuing to analyze cable and streaming TV. We will consider television history from the perspective of changing industrial, technological, and programming forms. In doing so, we will encounter and analyze key concepts from television studies that have been used to theorize the medium and we will evaluate different perspectives on the relationship between television and US culture and society. Throughout, the course will center questions about gender, race, and class in television programming and culture. Credit 3 units. Required Screenings: Wednesdays @ 7pm
