AMERICAN CULTURE STUDIES 382R

The goal of this course is to explore the multiple ways in which Christian traditions are practiced in America. This course will focus on the practices of contemporary Catholic, Protestant, and Eastern Orthodox Christians in the United States. This course asks: how do diverse Christian theologies and practices as well as social needs shape practitioners' understanding of what it means to practice Christianity authentically? This course also attends to the power some Christian communities wield to make claims that only their way of practicing Christianity is authentic, modern, and American, and the consequences of that power. In short, this course brings to the fore the social, political, and cultural factors that contribute to the shaping of how Christianity is practiced by a specific group in the United States.
