Brooke Eastman Receives Weil-Hall Dissertation Grant

Mark S. Weil/Joan M. Hall Dissertation Grant recipient Brooke Eastman spent two weeks in Summer 2025 conducting dissertation research in Utah, New Mexico, Georgia, and Florida. Supported by this grant, Brooke was able to engage with significant works of land art and access primary source materials related to these sites. While in Utah, she visited Nancy Holt's Sun Tunnels (1973-76) and conducted archival research on land ownership. Brooke then traveled to Santa Fe, where she was the first scholar to see Nancy Holt's Moon Book (1972) at the Holt-Smithson Foundation. Following this visit, the Foundation invited her to write an article introducing this object to the public, which will be published in early 2026. During her time in New Mexico, she also spent almost twenty-four hours observing Walter De Maria's Lightning Field (1977) under a variety of weather conditions, and was able to speak with the site's caretakers. In July, Brooke traveled to Georgia to view Beverly Buchanan's Marsh Ruins (1981) and other historical sites with which her work engages. She concluded her trip in Jacksonville, Florida, where she attended the exhibition "Knowing the West."
