Ila Sheren Appointed AMCS Director of Graduate Studies

AMCS is thrilled to announce that, effective July 1, 2022, Ila Sheren will be the new Director of Graduate Studies in American Culture Studies! 

"I'm so pleased that Ila Sheren will be serving as Director of Graduate Studies of the American Culture Studies program,” said Paige McGinley, Associate Professor of Performing Arts and incoming Director of AMCS. "I have personally observed Dr. Sheren's commitment to and creativity with graduate education, which will now benefit all those pursuing a PhD Certificate in AMCS. I am excited to see how Dr. Sheren's outstanding scholarly research and teaching in the areas of contemporary art, activism, and Latinx art and visual culture will enhance our AMCS learning communities."

Professor Sheren is Associate Professor of Art History and Archaeology​ at Washington University in St. Louis. Her research focuses on questions of borders and decolonial theory, whether in the case of the U.S. frontera, environmental crisis in the Global South, or the performative nature of political protest. She teaches courses in new media, activist art, and alternative art practices, as well as surveys of modern and contemporary art.
