AMCS is thrilled to congratulate Crystal Payne, a PhD student in English Literature and a Lynne Cooper Harvey Fellow in American Culture Studies, on her selection as Emerging Scholar at the Twenty-first International Conference on New Directions in the Humanities. Payne presented her dissertation on “Refugees, Mini-migrations and the Centering of the Global South.”
The International Conference on New Directions in the Humanities hosts plenary sessions led by leading thinkers and innovators from around the world. Every year, the Emerging Scholar Awards are given to outstanding graduate students and emerging scholars with active research interests in conference themes. This year’s conference was hosted in June at Sorbonne Université in Paris, France.
Crystal Payne is a graduate student studying English and American Literature. Her academic research focuses on Caribbean Literature, Postcolonial Studies, Global Anglophone Literature, Migration Studies, and Hemispheric American Studies. Payne’s dissertation unearths historical representations of the Caribbean as a transient space, a tourist’s paradise, and a place from which to leave. Outside of her research, Payne is a Community Engagement Fellow with the Center for Humanities where she works closely with local community leaders and advocates in North St. Louis to plan community development events
